Valentine's Day

Another late post here! Valentine's day was great except for the fact that I was (and still am) sick with what was Strep Throat and is now one heck of a sinus infection.

And by the way, what I am referring to as "Valentine's Day" is actually the 11th - the day we had our Valentine's Party at school!

Here are some pics:

Superbowl

I don't have much to say about the Super Bowl (especially since it happened 3 weeks ago), but I wanted to show off the cute cupcakes that I made!

Mckay/Walker Wedding in Hot Springs!

Last weekend we drove up to Hot Springs, Arkansas for Melissa McKay and Zach Walker's wedding. When Melissa told me she was getting married in Hot Springs, I was super excited because I had never been there before. As soon as we got into town we were stunned by the awesome beauty of this place. It's nestled in the mountains and is absolutely gorgeous. In fact.. it's so gorgeous I really can't think of any other way to describe it because words don't do this place justice. We loved hanging out around the state park area, walking around downtown, and the weather was great. It had been snowing and very cold there so we were a little worried at first but the whole weekend it was in the 60s, sunny, and perfect... speaking of perfect - let me tell you about Melissa's wedding!

The wedding venue was a little chapel and reception hall about a mile or so from our hotel (awesome!) and the wedding was wonderfully small and intimate. The ceremony was absolutely gorgeous and filled with the Word. Melissa's sister and her dad sang during the ceremony and her grandfather (Daddy B) gave a beautiful blessing over the family towards the end of the ceremony. After they said their "I dos" we headed about 10 feet to the reception hall. Dinner was heavy hors d'oeuvres and everyone danced the night away. It was a great wedding and we are so happy for Melissa and Zach!

On Sunday Casey and I woke up early and went to the Arlington for breakfast. We didn't stay here (we stayed at the Park Hotel which was AWESOME and the people were so, so, so nice!) but it was absolutely stunning. Casey and I love historic hotels and this one was huge and very ornate. If you are ever in HS you have to stop by and see it!

After breakfast we headed over to the Quapaw Bathhouse to get a hot stone massage and take a dip in the "healing mineral waters of Hot Springs". Casey had booked an appointment without me knowing so the whole thing was a surprise! We usually don't do a lot for Valentine's, so this was a very cool V-day gift. :) The massage was wonderful as was the "bath". The water left my skin feeling super soft and we left Hot Springs feeling super relaxed.

Here are some pictures from HS!

Love and Loss

Hello friends and family - it's been a while...

Let me start out with the bad news..

Last Saturday night (Sunday morning) I received a phone call from one of my best friends Kelli at around 1:30am. I always answer my phone if I hear it, especially if it's at night because I am always afraid that if I don't answer that something bad will have happened and I wouldn't have gotten to be there for someone I'm close to. I answered the phone and could immediately tell that Kelli was hysterically upset. She and her boyfriend had fought earlier in the day about something and then he had gone out of town with some friends as planned. She was upset because he wasn't answering his phone and she wanted to talk to him. I tried to calm her down as best I could and I told her to go home because she shouldn't be out driving around upset like this and that her boyfriend (who is my husband's best friend) was in Oklahoma and was safe. I told her that we would deal with everything in the morning when she woke up and that she was too upset to think rationally right now. She continued crying and I continued listening to her and talking her through everything. At what would be the end of our conversation, I heard her drop her phone. I called her name out a few times and heard what sounded like her crying and struggling to find her phone. Then I heard a crash. I've been in wrecks before.. I know the sound of metal crushing. The phone went silent, but our call was still connected. I called out her name a few times and then hung up and called her sister. I told her sister that I thought she might have been in a wreck and Casey immediately started putting shoes and a jacket on and we left the house. While I was on the phone with her sister, Casey called 911 to tell them that he thought an accident might have happened around the area where she had been driving. An accident had been confirmed near where she was, but we still didn't know if that accident was her or someone else. I stayed on the phone with Kelli's sister and we finally arrived at the scene of an accident (still not sure if it was Kelli or not) about 15 minutes later. The road had been blocked off and we couldn't see the vehicle. I'll keep the details to myself, but we found out about 20 minutes later that it was Kelli.. and that the accident had been fatal. I sit here a week later still in shock that one of my best friends is gone. I had received frantic phone calls like that from her before, but I never imagined that the phone call I received that night would be the last time I would hear her voice.

The next few days are a blur... I slept maybe 2-3 hours on Sunday morning after the wreck and woke up and prayed that it was just a dream. I woke up and began making the phone calls that no friend wants to receive. One by one I contacted all of our mutual friends to tell them that she was gone. We came together that day at our house that day to be there for each other. My amazing best friends Leigh Anne and Sara came in from Nacogdoches to console me. Casey and I took Monday off to try to get things back together before we both had to go to work on Tuesday. Tuesday came and went... I have one of the most difficult classes that my elementary school has ever seen so my stress level was through the roof this week. Thursday I had a bit of a meltdown at school... but my principal helped calm me down and let me take a breather from my classroom. Thursday night was the visitation at the funeral home. The first thing I saw when I walked in was our paintings from Painting with a Twist. I am so upset with myself for not taking pictures that night... the last night I would get to spend with Kelli. All around the facility were pictures of her Kelli's smiling face. Pictures of her achievements, high school cheerleading, graduation from Kingwood High School... her diploma from Texas A&M... a pink hardhat from her work at Anadarko... framed architectural words like Faith and Believe from her new business Kelli's Creations... and pictures from her travels around the world.

Kelli was an amazing person, but more so, she was an amazing friend to anyone she met. She never held grudges, she never judged people, she just loved. We had our fair share of disagreements, but Kelli was great at reconciliations. She was great at forgiving. She was great at loving. I don't know if I've ever had a friend that checked in on me as much as Kelli did. Who made sure she made time to hang out with me on a weekly basis. Who would call me at 6:30am to talk because she knew I was bored on the way to work. Kelli was one of three people who were at every single one of my wedding functions. She knew what was important to other people and always made sure to be there when people needed her, even if it was an inconvenience.

Friday was Kelli's funeral and my last chance to tell her good bye. As fate would have it, Casey and I (along with Andrew, and two of Kelli's other best friends from Colorado and Oklahoma respectively) ended up sitting on the front row facing the beautiful framed portrait of Kelli. The service was perfect and we all smiled and cried our eyes out as the Aggie War Hymn played as the pallbearers took her away. It was as good as a funeral could get and I'm sure it made Kelli smile to see how many people came to celebrate her that day.

The good news is that I will see Kelli again soon... I know that she is smiling down on us and she has already shown me several times that she is still here with me. Whether it's three of my students spontaneously bursting into song (singing one of Kelli's and my favorites of course) during centers or Brown Eyed Girl coming on my Pandora station randomly yesterday while cleaning the house... I know she's still here. Even if I can't hug her. Even if I can't call her and laugh about me tripping on something yet again. I am comforted that we shared a passion for our faith in God and that is what I am clinging to as I mourn the loss of a great friend and my sister in Christ.

Current Body Stats

After stepping on the scale this morning I decided I was going to go back to logging my info on here to track my progress. This is for myself to keep me accountable and also so that I can come back to this and see how I was doing down the line.

Height: 5'1"
Weight: 122.6
BMI: 23.1
Body Fat Estimate: 29%
Waist: 27"
Hips: 37.5"

I just downloaded an app from HealthStatus that tells me my BMI & Body Fat is and I'm borderline overweight. No bueno!

Today I went to the Y and did BodyPump, which I love, but I pulled my tricep so it looks like I will be running for a week or so instead of group classes.

My Blogger Persona

Has anyone else noticed that my blog has multiple personalities? Is it a cooking blog? A family blog? Diet blog? Well my blog, like myself, is quite eclectic... and by eclectic I mean very inconsistent. I like to tell people that I don't know a lot about anything, but I know a little about everything. I also have ADHD (attention deficit) which means that my mind bounces around like crazy from one thing to another and a lot of the time I become "obsessive" about something and do that one thing for a while and then quickly burn out. Then I'll bounce to something else and then burn out and sometimes I'll go back to one thing that I have previously burnt out on and the cycle continues. While this is great if you are a believer that "variety is the spice of life" it can sometimes be cumbersome if you are trying to be consistent at something. Unfortunately my life has never been consistent so that's something that I'm trying to work on. While thinking about my New Year's Resolutions, I really figured out that my real goal this year is to be more consistent. The things I want to be consistent in are all things I've tried, but never made a habit in my life. Here are things that I would like to be consistent in:

1. Photography and taking more pictures and better pictures.
How I will achieve this consistent goal: Making it a point to take pictures every week. Also I am planning on going to my cousin's studio this summer to shadow him.

2. Staying fit. Story of most womens' lives. I just want to quit fluctuating so much so that ALL of my clothes fit ALL of the time and I don't have to have 3 different sets of clothes (really skinny clothing, normal happy size clothing, and "fat" clothing). Currently I am straddling the normal happy size and fat clothing so I want to work on shedding a few pounds on top of staying in better shape. I don't think that I will ever be one of "those" girls that has 0% body fat and looks awesome in everything, but I can be happy with my weight and size and that's what I truly want.

3. Have consistent hobbies. Did you know that I used to be a competitive inline speed skater? On the golf team in high school? A theatre geek? In junior high choir? President of the Home Ec club? An archaeology major? Highly involved in Student Government? A huge movie buff? A budding photographer? A really good cook? A Fashion Merchandising major? An avid doodler and painter? The list goes on. Do I do any of these things on a regular basis these days? Nope. I just want to be more consistent in my hobbies and doing something twice a year does not a hobby make.

In other news, the new Kings of Leon album is phenomenal. I am also really obsessed with the Cee Lo song "Forget You" (but the unedited version). Check them out.

Goodbye 2010!

Hello 2011!

This past year was the best year of my life. I married my best friend, finished my first year of teaching, and rekindled several wonderful friendships.

For New Year's Eve, Casey and I went to Nacogdoches to spend the weekend with Leigh Anne, James, Christy, Nick, Jennifer, and Carl and I can truly say this was the best NYE to date. It was so relaxed and understated and it was wonderful to end the year with such great friends.

Here are some pictures from our weekend:

The guys did a great job on the fireworks display!

Now for the resolution(s):

1. I will run my first half marathon. I am already working toward this - I signed up for the Austin Zooma half!

2. I will be more diligent.... in everything! I am a GREAT starter, but I have a hard time keeping up with things after I start them and I'm even worse at finishing things. This blog has been one of the only things I have continued to do after starting... well ever!

3. I will paint more, draw more, take more photos, dress up more, cook more, bake more, read more, and generally DO more with my life. As much as I love to sleep and lay on the couch watching crap television, I deserve better and so does Casey. I want to get out and do more with our lives. I want to take the dogs on more walks. I want to watch more movies than TV shows. I want to read more books than magazines (I LOVE magazines...) and I want to foster my relationships with family and friends more than ever.

4. This year, we WILL travel more. I absolutely love to travel... if I had one thing that was the most important thing that I wanted to do with my life (besides becoming a mother, and other family responsibilities) it would be to travel as much as possible. So far this year Casey and/or myself will be traveling to the following places:
  • St. Lucia (maybe) for our honeymoon in March
  • New York (again) to visit family
  • California (for Casey's work)
  • Colorado for a family vacation
  • New Mexico to visit Christy and Nick
  • On a cruise for Leigh Anne's bachelorette party
  • Possibly Indiana or Missouri to check out campuses if Casey decides to go to Seminary.
5. I will get back into shape (did I mention that I have gained 10 lbs since the wedding?) and STAY in shape. I'm so tired of the fluctuating due to my whimsical view on food. Food is for nourishment and overeating constantly is just gluttonous.

So hello 2011 and Happy New Year to everyone!
